FAN of Europe

Film Academies Network of Europe

Austrian Film Academy

Founded in 2009, the Austrian Film Academy has made it its task to promote and acknowledge the achievements of Austrian filmmakers, to share their concerns and communicate them to the general public. The national and international success of Austrian feature films in recent years reflects increasing public interest.

The new Austrian Film Award, which was created by the Academy is awarded annually and showcases the achievements of the Austrian film industry in our own country more effectively too.

The Academy consists of 500 well-known public personalities from the Austrian film sector and sees itself as a platform for filmmakers by filmmakers that makes it possible to communicate and implement the concerns of filmmakers in a publicly effective way and on a broad common basis. Moreover, the academy aims at raising public awareness of Austrian film and strengthening the cohesion of the film industry itself. Following director Barbara Albert and actor and director Karl Markovics, the Academy’s Presidency was taken over by actress Ursula Strauss and director Stefan Ruzowitzky from 2013.

Tasks and Statutes of the Austrian Film Academy:

  • Organizing the Austrian Film Award and the related gala event every year
  • Promoting Austrian film as an essential component of Austrian and European culture
  • Establishing a central platform in order to encourage, strengthen and maintain the exchange of experience and discussions between Austrian and international film makers on the perspectives of Austrian cinema
  • Promoting and strengthening the significance of the Austrian Film Award in the Austrian and European cultural landscape
  • Developing cooperations with international partner institutions
  • Organizing public events on cultural political issues in the audiovisual field
  • Implementing European cooperation projects since 2016

Since July 2009, the Austrian Film Academy has been an official member of Fan of Europe, the network of national film academies and the European Film Academy.
